Explorer. The name evokes images of adventure, fearlessness, and blazing new trails.
When Rolex launched the Explorer in 1953, they were so serious about it being the rugged tool for any situation that it was equipped with an extra-durable case, a special high-visibility dial, and as an option, the company would lubricate the movement with innovative oils that would operate reliably and not change viscosity from -4 degrees to 104. This allowed use of the watch in extreme circumstances without the oils' changes in viscosity affecting the accuracy of the timing mechanism.
Legend has it that the first Explorer was made for Sir Edmund Hillary and his team that were the first to summit Mt. Everest, also in 1953. In the 1970's, Rolex introduced the Explorer II with the reasoning that when cave explorers, known as speleologists, spend time underground, they lose all sense of time, and need to know whether the indicated time is am or pm. That sounds a lot like trying to justify their technology, but plenty of other people use a 24-hour scale, known as "military time." Medical personnel, people in the aviation field, law enforcement, and plenty of other customers found the 24-hour hand useful.
The modern Explorer II has a huge following, and while you can still use the fourth hand for military time, most likely more people use it to read a second time zone, or GMT time. Either way, it is a stunning design, and still every bit the tool for adventure Rolex originally designed.
